Manic Monday: Quake

MM-bluetextSome of you may know my friend Steve.
He grew up here in Michigan, and we both went to the same high school. Then, after a bit of moving around, he somehow ended up in California for quite a few years. I remember one day in the early 1990′s I tried calling him, and got a recording that said “Due to the earthquake in the area which you are calling, this number is currently unavailable.”
(!!!)
He ended up being fine, thank goodness, but that really freaked me out. I can’t imagine living in a state where people actually get USED to that sort of thing. (“What? Oh, yes, we’re having an earthquake. No big deal. Only a 5.8.” Let’s send out for pizza!)
A year or so ago, he moved to New York.
I’m glad.
This means when California inevitably cracks off and falls into the ocean, he and I can both be watching from a safe distance just like everyone else.

There is a place in the Santa Cruz mountains where there is a deep ditch between the phone poles and the road. The earthquakes have steadily been moving them apart. Whenever there is a quake in that area, it tends to interrupt phone service. Since the natives like to bet on the richter scale numbers, this makes it hard to reach their bookie.

Anti-spam word today is slimy. Okay, I live in California and my MM is about an earthquake that took place here. Have a great MM. :)

Jamie: Santa Cruz mountains? I’m not entirely sure where that is, but I know when this happened, he lived in L.A.

ComedyPlus: Aahhhh! You’re one of them! Hurry! Move away while you still can!

CWM: He’s living in New York now! I THINK that qualifies as “fine”. :)

I’m from the UK and have only actually felt earthquakes in the last few years. Of course, they’re very small, but to feel the world shaking like that is quite scary.

Well, I think that our earthquake last week being only a 5.2 is one of the reasons I didn’t bother waking up.

I was in Loma Prieta, and that was a lot stronger. Sounds like your friend was in the Northridge quake.

You know now that Steve moved to NYC, I prognosticate that the entire balance of the tectonic plates has been thrown askew, and I now predict that “the big one” is going to hit New England instead of California.
Look for the entire New York City metro area to slide into the icy Atlantic.

I hate to tell you this, but earthquakes can happen anywhere there is ground. In fact, in the early 1800s there was a quake in the middle of the country that actually caused the Mississippi River to run backwards for 24 hours.

It’s true! You can look it up!

And…there is an extensive series of fault lines in the northeast. It’s plate tectonics baby!

Damn! They actually have a recording that says that! How proactive. What won’t they think of next?

“The person you are trying to reach is sitting cross-legged before their open fridge, eating pudding and weeping.”

Anthony: I imagine it would be quite scary indeed! At least, being from the UK, you can talk about it with a really cool accent.

Lynda: When I heard about the earthquake last week, I thought about all the bloggers I know who live in the midwest, and you were one of them. :)

Morgen: As long as the “Big One” doesn’t hit Michigan, I’m ok.

Travis: Of course they CAN happen anywhere, but they usually stick to familiar places like Japan and California. I guess they like sushi and bean sprouts.

Grumpus: That would make a GREAT answering machine message!
