I’ve noticed, after my last few trips to the store, that prunes are now being called “dried plums.”
I guess they’re being re-named because plums sound juicy, fresh, and youthfully delicious, whereas prunes have acquired an unfortunate connotation with old, dried up things.
Plus, they have a reputation for, um, speeding things up in the bathroom, so to speak.
So I can see how the manufacturers and marketers might want to make things sound a little younger and sexier.
Does this mean that raisins may someday be called “Dried Grapes”?
Then there are the things I’ve never even tried, like figs and dates. They sound similar to prunes and raisins, both in texture and flavor. Are they? How many of you have tried them?
I like fresh plums, but am not all that keen on prunes.
Grapes are ok, but I really don’t care for raisins.
So I have no idea if I’d like figs or dates.
Perhaps I should put it on my list of things to try before I turn forty.

Eating your date has got it way over dried plums or prunes. Much sweeter. Still good fiber too.
Later Y’all.

My MM post today focuses on Martin Luther King Day.

Today the pits. Tomorrow the wrinkles.
Posted 21 Jan 2008 at 12:04 pm ¶Mmmm….I love eating my date.
What? There’s a fruit called a date? That’s not what I talking about!
Heh heh, my word was ‘stalker’!
Posted 21 Jan 2008 at 12:41 pm ¶I don’t like dried prunes or raisens. I’ve never had a date so I haven’t a clue how they would be. Have a great MM.

Gattina: Just think of me as a really eccentric college professor.
Villager: They tasted terrible? Really? Was it similar to prunes and raisins?
Jamie: Tomorrow the wrinkles?? OMG, what an awful thing to put in a commercial! LOL!
Metalmom: Meloncutter’s post was ALL about “eating your date!”
ComedyPlus: I’m not keen on prunes/raisins either. They don’t really taste like much, plus I don’t like the texture. The fresh fruit is so much better!
Posted 21 Jan 2008 at 2:09 pm ¶Prunes, figs and dates all leave a bad taste in my mouth. Plums, grapes and raisins I love. Don’t worry, if you never get around to tasting figs and dates, you won’t have missed a thing other than a frown I guarantee you.
Happy MM!

Posted 21 Jan 2008 at 2:19 pm ¶I love dates. And prunes. So, do we have to call prune juice “dried plum juice” now?
I didn’t care much for eating just a fig, but I do love me some fig newtons!
Oh, and add freeze-dried foreskins to your list of shriveled up things you don’t want in your mouth…
Posted 21 Jan 2008 at 4:13 pm ¶There’s no way for me to talk about not liking dates or eating dates or dried up dates without some juvenile joke running through my head.

Posted 21 Jan 2008 at 11:12 pm ¶Morgen: “Dried Plum Juice” sounds awful… almost as bad as “Prune Juice”!
Travis: Atta boy!
CWM: To a certain extent, that’s a good thing. When talking about human beings, it’s a good thing. When talking about dried fruit, yeah, it gets a little silly.
